The AV-56 stump grinding machine is versatile enough to sharpen all the popular types of stump grinding bits. Last month I focused primarily on sharpening tips for the standard and yellow jacket stump grinding bits. The AV-56 with the proper tool fixture and grinding wheel will allow you to sharpen green/red stump grinder bits.
The green/red teeth are circular bits designed to have three cutting surfaces. The grinding wheel for these bits is rounded on the face of the wheel allowing you to sharpen the concaved face of the bits along with the outer carbide rim if needed. If the tooth has not been overused, I will sharpen 100 percent of the concaved face section of the tooth to get a new cutting surface. If the cutting edge has been overused and is rounded over, I will sharpen 90 to 95 percent of the concaved face section of the tooth. Then I will sharpen the outer rim of the tooth with the side plated section of the grinding wheel until the new cutting edge is restored. The less material removed from the outer rim of the tooth will allow longer life for that tooth.
